Expeditions App Description

Google Expeditions is an immersive learning and teaching tool that lets you go on VR trips or explore AR objects. Explore historical landmarks, go down to the atomic level, get up close with sharks – even visit outer space! In the classroom or with groups, Google Expeditions allows a teacher acting as a 'guide' to lead classroom-sized groups of 'explorers' through VR tours or show them AR objects. Guides can use a set of tools to point out interesting things along the way.\n Users who aren't in groups can also explore on their own, either in VR or AR.\n Features: • Explore a world of places and things on your own with your phone, tablet or VR device. • Guide classroom-sized groups of locally connected users from your phone or tablet. • Join a guide in immersive AR or VR and let them take you through one of our hundreds of VR or AR expeditions. VR mode can be used with a Google Cardboard or Daydream viewer. • Connect devices over the same Wi-Fi network. If the Guide has downloaded some of the expeditions, no Internet connectivity is required to run one. • Choose from a growing list of over 800 expeditions. Each one is a curated set of VR imagery or AR objects, along with integrated descriptions, talking points and questions. • If only they hadn't removed support for Cardboard v1 headsets...

I love the app. The only thing I don't like is that they removed support for the magnetic switch on VR headsets, so if you're unlucky enough trip have one of these headsets, you have to open up the heat and touch you're phone. MANUALLY. I'm going to use the Cardboard app now.
  • Want to love it.

Many bugs in the app. I’m trying to guide a class but explores are unable to connect to the class. The only way explores can see the class is I have to uninstall and reinstall the expeditions app on the guiding iPad. I have to do this every time I want to guide. It’s just not working. Also I’ve posted question asking for help from google and have not received a response. Very frustrating.

I think this app is amazing for schools and just average joes with a thirst for knowledge.Again the app is great, but there is just one problem.I have a VR and it’s fine, just it doesn’t have any controllers that you hold. The thing is that you need to touch the screen to actually make it work, and it’s a pain to take off my headset, touch the screen of my phone and put it back on to just get through one part of the presentation I want to do.So hopefully you see where I’m going.Just to give you an idea, maybe you should just have some mode where you don’t have to touch the screen for it to work.Other than that the app is great.

Google has delved deeper and deeper into the education market. With it’s free GSuite for Education software, Google continues to add services to benefit educators and students. The Expeditions tool was embraced in classrooms beginning in 2016. The app allows the opportunity to explore the world outside of their classrooms with VR field trips with over 1,000 virtual-reality and 100 augmented-reality tours. The field trips themselves are beautifully engaging explorations of experiences many students would not have otherwise. Mobile devices and VR viewers are used to experience Google Expeditions. These devices can be used to explore and tour museums, art galleries or colleges. They can also experience things like swimming underwater or navigating our solar systems without leaving their classrooms. Expeditions kits purchased through suppliers contain tablets or mobile devices pre-installed with the app, viewers to seat them in, a local wi-fi router, chargers and a storage case. Not all of these items are required to experience the expeditions so there is also an opportunity to build your own kit or explore on your own with the minimum of a device, a viewer and the app. This virtual reality tool was one of the 1st of bring VR into classrooms everywhere with it’s inexpensive Google Cardboard viewer. It is easy to use and completely engaging. The library continues to grow, offering more and more opportunities for immersion learning. The app itself can also be experienced without a viewer. It offers 360° tours using the devices accelerometer. In addition to the expanded VR library, it has added AR to it’s repertoire. With all that this app has to offer, it is a definite must have for classrooms.

As a K-12 educator I think this is a pretty good app for virtual reality. This app allows the user to view different places around the world as well as anatomy. I like that there are to modes, basic VR and then a setting for use with Google Cardboard. I could see this being used in an educational setting to allow students to view parts of the world, like Pompeii to help enhance a lesson. I also like that there are so many science options to help enhance a students understanding like in anatomy. The issue I have is a lot of the different options do not have narration but mostly reading. This could pose a serious issue for younger learners. Overall though it is a great VR tool.
