MoneyWell : Personal Budgeting App Description

MoneyWell is a personal finance package built around the concept of envelope budgeting. It's designed to keep you from overspending by using proactive budgeting techniques. It also helps you direct your extra money to debt reduction and savings so you end up with a nice cash buffer for emergencies and a more stress-free life. You can download it for free, look at a sample budget or try setting up your own. There's no time limit and it's fully featured except you can only create 200 transactions in "Free mode". If you like what you see, there's a subscription which unlocks unlimited transactions.  We'll never remove access to your data, so even if your subscription expires and you return to "Free mode", you'll still be able to view and export your data. Too many other financial tools rely on end of the month budget reports to keep your spending in line, but by that time it's too late to fix anything. We call this regret-based budgeting, where you print reports and then regret not sticking to your plan. It's a broken system that most people can't use. With MoneyWell, there's one simple rule: Spend only what you have in your buckets. MoneyWell will help you by allowing you to create a spending plan and then telling you how much you need to save in each bucket category to meet your goals. MoneyWell : Personal Budgeting App Reviews

  • Good app...could be better!

I had used MoneyWell when it was a stand alone app. It did pretty well, but had some quirks. I like that it's an application rather than a web browser and I like the price for the subscription. You can also (eventually) add accounts even if the institution is not found in their list (though you'd have to stumble upon this during the Create Account phase). The best feature I like is the ability to RECONCILE accounts (confirming that a financial account is balanced) while most apps simply list transactions that you or your instituion have recorded; to me, the extra step of validating expenses (and associating reciepts) keeps the user on top of their finances. A bit of a learning curve for most, but a fairly well designed app. Now for the real negatives! You can't undo/redo. Reports are just a list; no options for visuals. A few of the instiutions you can link to won't sync or removing security features like 2 Factor Authorization. When it doesn't, the majority of institutions says there was an error connecting (but you can download QIF files and import then, which isn't really a problem unless the institution doesn't offer the feature). No app will be perfect. There is still a good deal of work to do here (otherwise I'd rate it higher); it's a pretty good app. Glad to read that they have been working on it a bit at a time over the years.

I've been using MoneyWell since about 2009. I'm so greatful to the new owners for keeping it alive and improving it with new features. Also their email support has always been very helpful and responsive. I've even bought extra licenses for friends and family (before it was on the App Store) just to try to help support them. This app's envelope style of budgeting fits with how we track our finances. I don't know what I'd do without it. I'm very much looking forward to seeing what's next for MoneyWell.

I've been using Moneywell for 12 years and I love how simple yet powerful it is. And I'm so glad to have mobile sync and collaboration back with the latest update! I have different Budgets set up for personal and business finances and it works perfectly for generating spending category reports for my accountant at the end of the year. I always get complimented on how organized I am and it's all thanks to Moneywell. It's also amazing to be able to import transactions from financial institutions via OFX file. Moneywell is one of the top apps I recommend to family and friends, and it's a great way to take control of your finances and customize it to how your own brain works. Keep up the great work, guys!

I've been using Moneywell for fifteen years. I've found it to be the best way to keep track of my money. I'm glad to see it's still being updated. I also generally don't buy software that requires a subscription. However, Moneywell is my one exception. According to the developers, they couldn't sustain continued development of Moneywell without charging a subscription, so I understand their decision.
  • Best Budgeting App Out There

UPDATED REVIEW!! FINALLY SYNCS! And I can sync it with my wife! The app now allows you to sync with anyone you want to by inviting them to share your budget! If you've been looking for an app that allows to create and keep conrol of a budget, to carry over funds within budget categories from one month to the next, that allows you to track multiple accounts from multiple institutions and categorize those accounts, Moneywell is the only one that fits the bill! I will never switch to another budgeting app. This does everything I need as a small business owner and entrepreneur, investor and person who lives by a household budget with my wife. I've been using Moneywell for over 10 years to track accounts and transactions in my personal finances, my small business, and my investments. Because of the inability to sync for all those years, I have tried most of the other budget apps. They all pale in comparision. They just aren't very good. Moneywell is simply more powerful, more robust, and still intuitive and simple to use.

I have been using moneywell for over 10 years and love it. Bucket budgeting is great for asigning every dollar a specific purpose. I love that I can set aside money in buckets for long term things like my annual home owners insurnace and property taxes. I am so happy that they now have the mobile app again and love that I can manage my money from my phone and have it sync to my mac.
  • Great support by new owners

Been using this app for over ten years. Support languished for many years with ownership change, but the new subscription model has seen significant improvement. The re-establishing of the simple sync between the main app and the iphone kept me from researching a different appl. On vacation, it was super conveneint to enter transactions at checkout and not wait until home to enter the transactions. Turned on my computer, connected to wi-fi, opened laptop application, and all the transactions entered on my iphone during my 16 trip were automatically uploaded. Brilliant!

MoneyWell is quirky and took me a little while to learn to best apply it to my financial situation, but there is absolutely nothing else out there that does envelope budgeting and basic checkbook features in such a streamlined and foolproof manner. I've been using the app for many years. I'm thankful to the new owners for keeping it alive when its survival was threatened, because I have no idea what I would use as an alternative. And I've looked around, believe me. If you're the sort of person for whom envelope budgeting is key to personal financial management, the modest subscription fee is a bargain for this unique software.

I was really excited about this App and trying it out . I thought I was purchasing the first year at the $9.99 that I signed up for. What a surprise or should I say shock when I see my receipt as being charged $49 and change. I have contacted Money Well and Apple for a refund. Still waiting. I hope it is just a mixup as it really sounds like a great App. I will apologize if that is the case. Mary Anne Wilmouth

I have worked with the developer of MoneyWell for years, and they are always responsive. The product itself is also fantastic. This is a brand new version with cloud syncing, I know there will be some bumps in the road (and anyone on the existing v3 of MoneyWell continues to receive support), I am really looking forward to the evolution of this product. It is such a great alternative to Quicken. I will never go back!
