FineReader PDF: OCR Converter App Reviews

  • MacOS vers.

The MacOS version cannot compare to the MS Windows version. How incredibly sad for Mac users.
  • NO Access to ANY App Features

UPDATE: Vendor's response was as ineffective as the software. Vendor responded, "ABBYY FineReader PDF is free for the first 7 days of usage after downloading and installing with all of the software features available to the user during this period..." I downloaded and installed the app on the same day. Attempted to USE the app ON THE SAME DAY AS INSTALL. Again, ABBYY, NONE - NOT ONE - ZERO - ZIP - ZILCH - NADA - of the features worked OTHER THAN the ability to view a PDF. While I appreciate your response, please feel free to actually RESPOND to the issues being addressed in the review of a potential customer. My central complaint was that I was promised a FULLY FUNCTIONAL app to TRY for 7 days and NO FEATURES WORKED AT ALL beyond the ability to read PDFs. FULL DISCLOSURE: I previously owned several versions of this app for Windows but wanted to try the Mac version before buying as I now own a Mac. I loved the previous Windows versions; nothing to love about this version... REVIEW: Description states, "The app is free to download and provides 7-days full access to all features." Not sure what part of this phrase the developer just doesn't understand: "...provides 7-days full access to ALL features" [emphasis added]. Law Insider defines "trial version" this way: "Trial Version means a version of the Software, so identified, to be used only to review, demonstrate and evaluate the Software for a limited time period." The point of a "trial version" is to "try" the app to see if you want to BUY the app. Don't waste the time it takes to download and "try" this non-functioning application. If you want to simply read PDFs, download Adobe Acrobat, because that's all this app will allow you to do. The app repeatedly asked me to pay $99 for the privilege of doing anything other than read PDFs. I did attempt to do some OCR on a PDF and the app told me it was restricted to performing OCR on only the first 40 pages and I was fine with that, however, while the app went through the process, the output files are still missing in action. Tried several times, exporting the file with different names to easily accessed folders (Desktop, My Documents, etc.) and the files never showed up. I even named one file AABBYY_TEST_FILE_No._3 and... nothing. This app must be channeling Harry Houdini because all the output files simply disappeared. Or were never created. Maybe they're invisible? I guess now I have to find a digital forensics app to locate invisible files...

Went to reinstall FineReader OCR Pro on my Macbook Pro and it is no longer in the APP store? Replaced with this money grubbing version that is WAY overpriced and no one time purchase option!!? Man this is not what I expected from this company. So what can I do now with the $128.69 license I have, to software I cannot download and install anywhere?
  • Less functionality and performance than previous version.

Frequently updated review early 2023: You may recognize this app as a reskinned FineReader Pro, but it is missing a few features such as page reorder/move. Unchecking "Keep Headers…" during TXT export has no effect: Enjoy removing headers and page numbers from a 1000 page document. If you have the "Correct Page Orientation" preference on, you may find the random page skewed—Deskew was completely useless in correcting this bug. Why free rotation is not supported as in similar apps, well who knows? Some lengthy exports occasionally fail with little or cryptic explanations in the message bar (center top); or is it still running? There is a little blue cylon eye oscillating in the window. Random image handling errors pop up. "Internal program error: src" tells you they messed up putting jet engines on a biplane. It seems like a crippled port of a more functional PC app. JPEG's will no longer reliably import. I worked with tech support (Jan '23), but the directed download from their site will not even open. Support is slow; expect at least a one-day delay in between message and response. After a five days delay ABBYY support had me DL the build from their site. It would not install. It is overpriced and BROKEN rentware.
  • A GOOD PRODUCTIVE PROGRAM

THE PROGRAM WORKS GREAT! I JUST WOULD LIKE TO ONLY HAVE TO PAY FOR IT ONCE AND BE ABLE TO USE IT, LIKE, FOREVER. LIKE MOST OF MY OTHER PROGRAMS. MAYBE REDUCE THE PRICE FOR CONTINUING USERS WHO WANT TO KEEP USING IT. $70.00 FOR THE FIRST PURCHASE, AND $60.00 FOR THE SECOND AND CONTINUING YEARS. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. HAVING PROGRAMED OTHER APPLE PRODUCTS I KNOW IT'S NOT EASY. STAY HAPPY AND HEALTHY, DON KERR--RETIRED (ALMOST)
  • False advertising missing key feature

I previously was very satisfied with an older Windows version of Abbyy FineReader, and have used it extensively in a language revitalization project. I was hoping to continue to do so using the current version on macOS. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be possible. As of late afternoon on 28 April 2023, the App Store entry for FineReader PDF currently lists an In-App purchase option of "FineReader Premium Lifetime" for $129.99. This is exactly what I was hoping to purchase. While I understand the benefits that the company may see from a subscription model, my use case requires a perpetual license. As such, I attempted to purchase the $129.99 Lifetime option. I was very disappointed to see that this option is not actually available in-app. I consider this to be false advertising. Just as fatal a flaw, though, is the lack of text verification. A key feature in the Windows version of FineReader is the ability to review and correct the OCR before exporting. The Windows version highlights low-confidence recognized text and manually verify or correct it. This feature is missing entirely from the Mac app. I am extremely disappointed by each of these problems. As a result, despite being a very satisfied customer of a previous version of Abbyy FineReader for Windows (purchased before the subscription model took effect), I must unfortunately advise serious users to avoid Abbyy FineReader for Mac. As a result of these two issues, I will be taking a look at Readiris Pro and other alternatives.
  • Unethical Garbage Software

To new potential users - don't purchase, do some research for other PDF readers, a lot of them have OCR built in, and they don't pull the shady stuff this developer decided to pull on its loyal customers. If this company is not loyal to its paying customers, don't be loyal to them! I purchased Abby FineReader for $129 for the ocassional OCR text recognition (even though my scanner has this feature built in, but I wanted a slightly more professional solution) I try to open it today only to find out an update was released and forced on me without my input, and I couldn't avoid it, so now I have this trash ransomware asking me for another $70 to keep using it even though I already purchased this version. you guys could have let existing version clients keep their paid version, released a new rent to own version, offer existing customers to move at their own convenience or of their own violition if the value proposition was good. Instead you resort to these dark sales tricks to squeeze money out of people that already paid. Never again. This is literally on principle. If you wanted kind words, don't treat your paying customers like like someone you can rob.
  • The OCR app I've been dearching for

I have extremely low vision and have been looking for a reliable OCR app for years. While many other apps have failed, this app is working wonderfully to convert inaccessible PDFs into completely interactive and editable documents that maintain their original formating and images. The character recognition seems flawless so far.
  • Program works great but don't expect anything from Abbyy

I downloaded the free trial and it was great, but then when I went to buy it Abbeyy charged me $99 and the authorization codes failed to work. Turns out I somehow bought a Wondows version. Eventually I bought it thru Apple and it works great. I did send a series of emails to the compnay to get my $99 back and they did eventually get back to me and were very helpful. Bottom line, the program is great, be patient with help, but they are great too.
  • Accessible app with voice over on the mac

Hi. I have used this app for quite some t ime now and it works very good with voice over the screen reader on the mac. The only thing that doesn't work is when you scann something into the app and then you try to look at t he text that it scanned. what I end up doing though is converting it to something like a text document that then I can see what it scanned. Keep up the good work guys.
